Beefalo is an animal that is a cross between an American bison and a domestic beef animal. To be a registered full blooded beefalo, the full-blood Beefalo has to be exactly 3/8 Bison and 5/8 domestic beef. The 5/8 domestic beef is not restricted to any certain breed and may be a combination of two or more breeds such as Angus, Hereford or Charolais the idea of domesticating was the goal of many early cattlemen who believed the hardiness, long life, foraging habits and feed conversion abilities of the bison would be beneficial traits in domestic cattle.

By crossing the Bison and the domestic cow you receive the superior hardiness, foraging ability, calving ease and meat quality of the Bison with the milking ability and ease of handling from the domestic cow.

Beefalo looks and tastes much like modern beef. The animal itself is often hard to distinguish from any others bovine. Beefalo meat is tender, tastes slightly sweeter, and is lower in cholesterol than beef, fish, or chicken.
